Security
If you've traveled by air lately, you might’ve noticed that airport security is starting to look a lot more high-tech. With the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) rolling out new digital solutions across the country, the traditional shuffle of handing over your ID and boarding pass is being replaced by something sleeker, faster, and more secure: Digital ID and digital passport integration.
Let’s break down what this means for travelers, how you can take advantage of it, and what to expect the next time you head to the airport.

TSA Digital ID Revolution
In 2024 and continuing into 2025, the TSA began expanding its support for mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs) and digital passports as part of its identity verification pilot programs. These updates are designed to:
- Speed up identity checks
- Reduce physical contact
- Strengthen security through encrypted credentials
Travelers using select Apple or Android digital wallets can now present their ID digitally at TSA PreCheck lanes in many participating airports.
What is a Digital Passport?
A digital passport is an encrypted version of your passport stored securely on your smartphone or another digital device. It contains the same biometric and identity information as a physical passport but can be used at designated digital checkpoints for quicker processing.
Currently, digital passports are in pilot phases and are primarily being tested for domestic travel and streamlined international re-entry through programs like Global Entry. However, the tech is evolving quickly.

How To Use Digital ID at TSA Checkpoints
If you're flying from a TSA-supported airport, here’s how you can use a digital ID or passport:
Add to Wallet – Upload your state-issued digital ID or eligible passport to your smartphone wallet (Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, depending on your state and phone model).
Approach the TSA Digital Reader – At security, you'll tap your phone on the TSA’s Credential Authentication Technology 2 (CAT-2) reader.
Face the Camera – A biometric scan (usually facial recognition) will verify your identity. No need to hand over a physical document!
Proceed Through – Once verified, you're cleared for screening.
Your privacy is protected. Digital IDs only share the information needed for identity verification and require biometric match confirmation.
The TSA is working with the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and international partners to expand digital passport functionality for:
- Touchless customs re-entry
- International border crossings
- More widespread airport availability
Soon, we could see full passport-free international check-ins, especially for travelers using programs like Mobile Passport Control or Global Entry.
Travel is changing — and for the better. With digital passports and IDs, the TSA is creating a smoother, more secure, and more efficient airport experience. While it’s still early, getting ahead of the curve now will make your next trip faster and easier.
So next time you're packing your bags, you might not need to double-check your wallet for your ID — just make sure your phone’s charged.
